Weighted Drone Landing Mats for Surveying & Mapping

Weighted Drone Landing Mats for Surveying & Mapping

Drone surveying and mapping often means working wherever the project takes you. One flight might start from a grass verge, the next from gravel or a cleared area beside earthworks. A suitable take-off and landing surface is not always available where you need it.

A Whitetail weighted drone landing mat provides a barrier between your aircraft and the ground beneath it. With no ground pegs to install, it is straightforward to deploy when moving between survey locations.

A prepared launch area for each flight

Survey work can involve several flights, battery changes and moves around a site. Carrying a landing mat gives your team a familiar, clearly visible surface to return to throughout the job.

On grass, the mat separates the aircraft from vegetation beneath it. On gravel and loose ground, it covers material directly below the drone that could otherwise be disturbed during take-off and landing.

The mat supports your site preparation rather than replacing it. Choose firm, reasonably level ground, check for sharp objects underneath and maintain suitable clearance around the aircraft.

Help protect cameras, sensors and aircraft

Survey drones carry equipment that needs care, from camera lenses and gimbals to sensors mounted close to the ground. Dust, loose grit and vegetation are worth considering before every launch.

A landing mat helps limit direct contact with the surface beneath the aircraft and covers loose material within its footprint. It does not eliminate airborne dust or debris from the surrounding area, but it gives your team a more controlled surface for take-off and landing.

Move between locations without installing ground pegs

When a working day involves several launch locations, setup needs to be practical. Whitetail mats use a weighted perimeter rather than relying on ground pegs, making them useful on surfaces where pegging down is difficult or impossible.

Unfold the mat, position it on a suitable surface and check that it sits correctly before preparing the aircraft. When it is time to move, pack it away with the rest of your equipment.

The weighted edge helps resist lifting, but conditions still matter. Assess the wind, surrounding ground and aircraft clearance at each location.

Choosing between the 3ft and 5ft mats

The 3ft mat provides a compact option for smaller aircraft, where the drone’s dimensions and required clearance allow.

The 5ft mat offers a wider covered area for larger aircraft or teams wanting more space around the drone during take-off and landing.

Choose by the aircraft’s complete operating footprint, including propellers, rather than its body dimensions alone. A larger mat covers more ground; it does not reduce the prop wash produced by the aircraft.

For independent surveyors and in-house drone teams

Whether you operate independently or fly as part of an engineering, land management or surveying team, a landing mat can form part of a repeatable equipment setup alongside batteries, controllers and field accessories.

Whitetail grew from Scottish filmmaker and drone operator Steven Gourlay’s experience working on location. The weighted design addresses a practical problem encountered in the field: lightweight take-off mats lifting under prop wash.
